KlinReports learnt that over 500 out of 987 inmates of the prison escaped from custody while two of the fleeing inmates died in the process.

The fleeing prisoners, also, reportedly raped 36 female inmates and female prison staff during the jail break. Similarly, 20 warders were said to have been seriously wounded in the ensued pandemonium.

Nigeria’a Comptroller-General of Prisons, Olusola Ogundipe, confirmed the jail break, but told journalist that investigations were being carried out, with a view to finding out what actually happened.

Ogundipe said it was only 150 inmates that escaped, and that the prison authorities had arrested over 130 out of the number. He said the prison authorities currently trails the remaining 20 inmates. But many think Ogundipe is just being economical with the truth over the actual number of inmates that escaped from custody.

The prison comptroller, also, confirmed the rape of female inmate and female staff of Prisons. He said only one person died in the riot, not two.

The prisoners, Ogundipe stated, were protesting a discriminatory jail delivery being undertaken by Enugu state Chief Judge, Justice Innocent Umezulike. The prisoners, it was learnt, have been complaining that while some of them are being given pardon, others who have been awaiting trial for a long time were ignored.

Meanwhile, investigations continue into the remote cause of the Enugu jail break.
